Stilt Parking byelaws introduced by BBMP in Bengaluru
23:23
Parking is always a problem in the big cities and metro. The way the population and the wealth increases, the count of the vehicles multiplies too with rich people having more than two cars. Due to paucity of parking spaces we often see cars parked outside the house on the road which congests the city and also increases the chances of accidents as well. In the master plan of BBMP for the year 2015 provision for parking space was made mandatory but it does not mention stilt parking. Stilt parking was made compulsory in the city of Delhi but due to a judicial dispute the enforcement was kept in abeyance.
To solve the chronic problem of parking and to decongest the city Bangalore Bruhat Managar Palike has enacted byelaws which state that buildings having more than two floors will have to make provision of parking on the ground floor. No doubt Bengaluru needs a parking law to keep the congestion in control and to prevent accidents owing to its migratory population who comes here to work or for education. With the enactment of this new byelaw many feel it will bring a solution to growing congestion of the city.
What do the residents think?
When the opinions of the residents were taken, a mixed reaction was noticed and in many instances people remarked that rich people having multiple cars often park their cars on the road due to paucity of ample space of parking for all the vehicles.
In buildings of few areas there has been parking space in the ground floor already built but there are still few areas which have a parking problem. These areas are Vijaynagar, Malleshwaram, Jalahalli and Sanjaynagar.
The preparation of the proposal for stilt parking was being made in the year 2014 and the byelaw has been passed but the proposal for mandatory ground floor parking is yet to be finalized. As per the Byelaws laid down by BBMP buildings having more than three floor (G+3) should have a height of 11.5 metres. It can be expected that the government can further increase the height of the building.
With the enforcement of this positive step from the BBMP, Bengaluru can be expected to become less congested with decreased accident rates and it can allure more property takers and is certainly a step forward to beautify the city.

As per the situation and traffic, government came with an idea of making stilt parking compulsory but for corporate and commercial purpose it is affordable in case of residential people who are creating triplex it will be very expensive for them. Although the use of cars is in Bangalore is increasing with respect to the per head income but still this rule may not come so handy for residential purpose.
ReplyDeleteYes It would be very toff to implement for residential slot, again if we think city like Delhi where stilt parking is compulsory for everyone and people including residential zone has accepted it then why not in Bangalore? The buying power of people in Bangalore is no more less than Delhi. If the Government has planned something to reduce the Traffic problem then we should respect and think about its merits.
DeleteVery positive thought about our Karnataka government, do you have any idea how much it will cost? Stilt parking adds 20% more towards the total construction cost of the building which is not affordable for residential persons. Well I respect the plan but it can be putted in an other way like make it compulsory that those who don't have sufficient ground parking area they have to make stilt parking and without this no construction plan will be approved in BDA.
DeleteI didn't know about this concept before few days when one of my friend told me about this type of parking and the government is planning to implement it in Bangalore. I have some future plans to build my home here in Bangalore, we are staying in joint family so a triplex is minimum for us and if this stilt parking is compulsory than it will be very expensive for us, so the government should give some subsidiary for residential citizen if they are making it compulsory to everyone.
DeleteBangalore traffic demand stilt parking as a necessity of this city, few citizens may come with an argument that they don’t have any cars with them so they don’t need any reserved parking space in their residential plotting area. However no one knows whether in future they buy a car or not so in this case BBMP should make it mandatory for every one that they should reserve a minimum of two car parking spaces within the total plotting area.

DeleteStilt parking is not a new concept in India, Bangalore as a metro growing every day as more foots are stepping towards success people are becoming more sophisticated and they are living luxurious life. Rich families here having no of cars for individuals which leads to a future traffic and parking problems and to avoid such situation our Karnataka Government came with this solution. When a rule is made it might not be suitable for all but it is made for the betterment and on the count of majority/
DeleteDelhi is a huge city as we compare with Bangalore, their is minimum two cars for each person. So for this reason Delhi need stilt parking. But the recent period of Bangalore don't need this. If we think about the future the demand of cars will make too much traffic in Bangalore and also people will think about a place to keep it. So for residential purpose Bangalore need stilt parking in near future.
ReplyDeleteStilt parking is a necessity of Bangalore, in residential projects and big corporate houses it should be made compulsory, for every residential builders here, the construction cost may rise but it will help in saving some valuable space which can be used for other purpose.
ReplyDeleteAccording to BDA rules most of the residential builders are already planning parking area in the basement or ground floors. Now why to waste one entire floor for those people who are living in a nuclear family and if they are constructing their house for their use only. This rule should come with few modification.
DeleteThis is right as the population and wealth increases the vehicles also multiplies too. In this city each employee having their own car like this in a family if having four members means their having total of 4 cars. For them it’s difficult to park their own vehicles in their own place so they are parking at the foot path side which is producing traffic jam. Govt taking action/applying charges who were all going to park the vehicles at footpath side, on the road.. Thanks for the govt for helping to the populations by doing restricts to the vehicle owners to park their vehicle at safe place.
ReplyDeleteSince from last year people started construction of parking place at the ground floor of their homes, so that other people were not to face any problems while roaming on the footpaths, Govt also announced to the people to construct separate place for vehicles parking and restricts to don’t park at the footpath areas.
ReplyDeleteStilt parking idea is already successfully executed in city like Delhi. Recently BBMP is introducing the stilt parking in Bangalore. So, how the people will get the benefit from this proposal? Many of the rich people in the society have more than two four wheeler, but they think the road as their parking plot. As per BBMP laws, those building having more than three floor they have to make stilt parking. From this valuable step taken by the BBMP we can expected Bangalore as less congested and free from accident rates.
ReplyDeleteWhen a rule comes it comes for all, it don't see rich or poor there are people who don't have cars and if this rule comes in compulsory than it would be hard to survive for them. Stilt parking is very costly the government should think an alternative for it.
DeleteAs a growing city , many new residential projects are going on Bangalore. But the people are not thinking about the parking. That is the reason its making so much problem in the city. Some people keeping their two wheelers out side in road. Its really not a decent thing but they don't have any other option. After realize all BBMP approved the stilt parking laws. In my point of view this a very good step for the Bangalore city.
ReplyDeleteI’m happy with BBMP action, they took action to decrease the traffic by charging the amounts on the footpath vehicles parking's. BBMP noticed to all the property owners to park their vehicles underground of their own homes instead of footpath parking, BBMP really helping to the people of this city by actions on footpath vehicle parking.
ReplyDeleteTo control and managed the traffic and decongestive places BBMP came up with the new innovative ideas to control the traffic by generating vehicles parking at the road sides or no parking places. Whoever came to work or education they have to park their verhicles at the parking area or else police will take action on them.
ReplyDeleteStilt parking will affects a lot in Bangalore. The four wheelers are placing by several people on the road and non parking areas, after getting a new parking technology people will try to adopt it.It can also make some effect on road accidents as well as congesting the area. So far stilt parking concept successfully executed and adopted by many cities in India and also outside of India.
ReplyDeleteVery good opinion taken by BBMP on residencies, those areas which are listed are: Malleshwaram, Jalahalli and sanjay nagar. At these place residency of owners are having multiple cars due to ample of space they always park their vehicles on the road side which provide huge traffic jam. So its request from all the people who is suffering problems in those areas to take actions on the road side vehicle parking owners.
ReplyDeleteBBMP has approved the stilt parking concept right now. It's good concept actually not in India but also many countries adopted it and got good result also. But we are Indian , it will take some time for us to understand the concept and later its benefits.Using this concept we can make the city free from rush and accidents.
ReplyDeleteDue to the migrating people in Bangalore the rush of the city is growing gradually. Either they are coming for job or for education. That is the reason the city and also the traffic are getting congested day by day. Now a days people have more than one vehicle which also creating the congestion in residential sites. For this reason BBMP applying the Stilt Parking laws in residential sites which will make the city less congestion and it may reduce the accident rate also.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing to worried about this, making stilt parking will come very costly for small residential investor and there is hard and fast rule made that without stilt parking no plan will be approved. This is only for those people who are constructing more than three floors in their plot area and certainly there will be some more excuse for residential users.
ReplyDeleteWe have been seen from past 10 years that parking is a very big problem in Bangalore. Overall population of the city and also the wealth of the people are increasing. Due to less parking places sometimes people park their vehicle in non-parking area which creates very much congestion. And also it may raise the accidental rate. For this BBMP has plan for parking place in residential as well for commercial sites which is mandatory. But in BBMP plan their is not mention about stilt parking.
ReplyDeleteSimply News will spread like BBMP is taking actions on the vehicle parking at the footpath and at the road side vehicle parking owners but still at so many places of this city to much traffic is visible to see because of road side vehicles parking. BBMP has to take strong action on the vehicle owners then only this city people may place their vehicles at parking areas.
ReplyDeleteCity like Bangalore will surpass Delhi, Mumbai one day. Because many MNC’s company are interested to investing here , that is why huge amount of migrating people from other city are coming for job or study proposal. This is making the city very much congested. So far anybody can study that many people have more than one vehicle whether its two wheelers or four wheelers. This is also making the congestion as well the rush in traffic. Congestion in the sense people is parking their vehicle here and there because nobody can provide them parking areas. Recently BBMP has approved a parking law where the stilt parking concept is not mentioned. If we think deeply after 5years Bangalore needs curiously the stilt parking then, why not from now?
ReplyDeleteIt’s too much difficult to control the traffic of Bangalore but also BBMP is little bit controlled the traffic in few places of this city. The ideas and notices given to the Home owners by BBMP to construct separate place for vehicle parking at the ground floor of the homes by doing this traffic wont generate.
ReplyDeleteParking place should be mandatory for every residential building, those who have total plot are is equivalent to total built up area they should keep one floor as their parking area and those who have compounds in there plot they should leave some space as their parking area. If you see residential areas like BTM than most of the residence area using their front road as their parking area resulting the road to squeezed for traffic.
ReplyDeleteAll ready apartments are constructed with a basement parking or ground floor parking facility, the implementation of this rule is for those people who are building their house for commercial purpose, I mean to say those people who build triplex for rental income. Now for them it won't be difficult to manage because they are earning from it.
ReplyDeleteExcept few Karnatika most of the people who comes to Bangalore from different states prefer to live in apartments and in every apartments there is a basement parking facility to avoid traffic. So this rule will not going to make any impact on most of the Bangalorians rather it will help to minimize the traffic issues here during the morning office hours in residential areas like BTM , Koramangala and Marthahalli.
ReplyDeleteThis is just an action to avoid future traffic in Bangalore, now if you see in most of the residential area people keeps their vehicle out side their home and they are using it as a place of parking because of this road get narrowed which leads a traffic jam. May be because of this movement, the new residential areas will not face such difficulties.
ReplyDeleteEven if Bangalore is a planned city, still during morning hours traffic is a common problem for everyone here. This traffic problem can not be avoided in ring road or main roads but in residential roads like inside layouts are also facing same during these hours because of road side parking of this residential people. To avoid this issues government has planned this rule and it should be executed.
ReplyDeleteHey guys, this just one step to avoid road side traffic jams only, similarly our government should take saveral steps to redue the morning hour traffic from the place like BTM Layout, Silkboard and Marathahalli.
